The loser to Herbert Hoover in the 1928 presidential election was Al Smith, the Democratic candidate. Smith was the governor of New York and the first Catholic nominee for president from a major party. However, his opposition to Prohibition and public perception of him as a big-city, immigrant-friendly candidate hurt his chances in many parts of the country. Hoover, on the other hand, was a successful businessman and government leader who promised continued prosperity for the nation. He won the presidency by a wide margin and went on to serve during the onset of the Great Depression.
